Demo Update: V0.1.1


Hey folks, first update to the Helmet Head Demo :) This update includes some gameplay changes and additions, as well as some bug fixes.

Changes and Additions:

  • Damage system has been updated to use more granular damage type breakdowns, and the player and enemies now have resistances and weaknesses to certain damage types. Your resistances can be seen on the left of the screen. There is a temporary text area that displays any resistances currently on the player. At the moment these can only be gained from helmets.
  • Speaking of, you can now equip various helmets that have special effects and add damage resistances. For example, the Furnace Helm gives 100% fire resistance! Pretty useful for standing in a lake of flaming oil :D For the moment helmets can only be found in secret rooms.
  • The health system has been changed to use a health bar instead of the hearts. This is to allow for more granular damage numbers and for resistances and weaknesses to stack and apply their effects with more detail.
  • The healing system has been changed also. When you defeat enemies they will drop the same little red orbs as before, but now for every 5 orbs you collect you either regain 1 lost hp, or (if on full health) your max hp goes up by one. This system is still not final and may see changes or some major balancing in the future. My thinking here is that the more you play (and die) in the earlier areas of the game, the better you get at avoiding damage and can build a larger health pool for the later, tougher areas. A kind of skill-based meta progression if you will. But this could easily make the early game boring for more experienced players so I'll have to keep thinking about this system as time goes on!
  • There are now 3 types of secret room:
    • Treasure Chest. This chest will drop 2 items.
    • Helmet. Here you will find a new helmet to equip.
    • Treasure Troll. The first npc type character in the game. These fellows roam the Plane in search of stray items. If you find one, they will offer you a choice between a weapon, and upgrade or a full heal.
  • Test Mode. When you start the game now you will be greeted by a simple window that offers a choice between a new game (starts a fresh run), or a new game in test mode. Test mode simply means you start the run with loads of gold and access to all weapons, upgrades and helmets at the beginning of the run. There is a workbench also to try applying some upgrades. This is so that you can mess around with different weapon and upgrade options withhout having to farm them in a normal run. The workbench and upgrade system is still veeeeeery WIP though, so please bear with me if there are any bugs or jank here. 
  • Taking a hit now totally interupts your attack animation. So use the slower, heavier hitting weapons with more caution!
  • The settings menu now has an option to view instructions/controls.
  • Updated the lighting effect for the fire.
  • Adjusted some audio sfx levels.
  • Some minor damage number adjustments.

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed bug where the settings menu background didn't fade back in after adjusting the graphics sliders.
  • Black screen of death. There was an issue causing the levels to not load correctly at times, resulting in a black screen after loading from scratch or when loading the next level. To remedy this in the meantime this demo is a Debug build instead of a Release build, as the issue seems to be with the way resources are loaded in Godot Release builds. However if you encounter this issue still, please let me know.
  • Fixed bug where bombs were leaving behind a "ghost" after exploding, that could still be interected with.
  • Fixed bug that was causing upgrade level to be ignored when calculating damage.

I've probably forgotten some stuff, but this is the bulk of it anyway. Thanks to all who've helped me with feedback and suggestions, it means a lot to me :)
